Donated Jewlery Raise $800 for Summer School Scholarships

Sisters donated new or gently used jewelry to for a fundraiser for scholarships.

What an amazing program! Spending time with powerhouse labor women live and in HER story! I feel truly blessed and special to share and learn how we pull together our unique and priceless resources, and work together to build a movement that continues to grow and expand labor unions for all workers.

Back to College I go

Day #2 of the Summer School for Union Women. So grateful to have been bless with this experience. Learning some really interesting facts about myself… I DON’T LIKE HOMEWORK is one.  Another interesting fact is, I’m a STRONG PUBLIC SPEAKER. Even though I was shaking in my flip flops, as I walked and stood in front of my class and instructors at the podium giving my first introduction speech. Trying to force myself to keep eye contact with my audience, while also keeping my place in my notes.  I swear I heard my own voice shaking with nervousness. At the end I stood and waited for the brutal critiques…THERE WERE NONE! I was told my speech was superb. WOW!!!!  I think I have found my calling. Maybe the repetitive speeches I've given my son has atleast paid off for me.

Can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be!

The Susan Winning and Lynne Turner Leadership Skills gets better every day, and it's only the second day!
We're enjoying the short jaunt to the Africana Center, (a little Vitamin D in between classes), and realizing that leadership can mean trying different things when what you're used to doing stops working or doesn't work well.  Sharing strategies and techniques with a cadre of international women leaders has the potential to achieve excellence for all!

Saga of Sight!

Hey There Sisters,

Perhaps my brain is just too addled this week, or maybe I've been cursed by a Glasses witch who is working for a lasik surgeoon!!  But I started out on Saturday by stepping on my glasses and bending the frames to the point that when I put them on, I looked kind of like a Picasso subject.  Then all during Sunday, I and several of my pals tried to bend the wire frame back so that I could use all three of my lense areas (they are trifocals).  Finally one side of the frame (the stem that goes over your ear) had a clean break.  Luckily, I had a pair of sunglasses to wear so that I could at least see. I was handicapped when it was dark, however, and the glasses are really meant to be used outdoors.  They are too dark for indoors.

On Sunday, I ventured down to the Ithaca Mall and found a Sterling optical store.  The young woman was so kind. She said they couldn't be fixed, but she did straighten the glasses.  I asked if it was possible to find a pair of frames that the lenses would fit into.  No such luck. We examined every pair and we came close - but no such luck.  She kindly taped them up for me so I could see.

Now it is Monday.  The tape didn't hold so I went to the shop on the first floor of the Purcell center to buy some tape.  They don't sell it, but the very nice gentleman manning the store, went to his First Aid kit in the back and brought out some medical tape and helped me to re-tape my glasses.  What a nice thing to do!  Now I can see, even though I look like part of the cast of "Revenge of the Nerds."

So today, dear sisters, if anyone finds the sunglasses tthat I lost yesterday, please tell me.  They apparently fell out of my bag sometime last night.  Black and orange in a black case.  Help me break this spell !

Sisters! It has been...

AMAZING! This is my first year, I got lucky through a scholarship, and had no idea what to expect. I am, proud, happy, excited, and so motivated by this Summer School for us as women in leadership roles.
My first day and everyday has been great because everyone here staff and other sisters are so welcoming, helpful and motivational. I have had great opportunities to speak with other people.

Let me just mention I am 24, amoung older strong women, and they have really tried to mentor and impower me every moment I have been here. Trying to gather younger people is tough but its possible and I stand here representaing various things but mostl importantly trying to get that next wave going!
Everyone here understand the importance of trying to get more younger people involved.

With that said, I wish and hope I am able to make it back here in the near future and every time like some sisters who have attended almost every summer school class. I want to take in everything, to bring back and impower others!
I am being informed and we are sharing amoungst ourselves experiences facts and power. I really want to walk away with everyones information to keep intouch.

So any sisters who did not make it this year and have attended, please also send me your info and a small brief intro of who, what you do, and where. I want to really unify us to become stronger!

I am not part of a union I am part of an organization. If we stick and grow we become powerful in times where right now we are under so much attack and being divided.
This is a crucial time for us!
My organization is called ROC-NY, Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York.
I want to be in the know abourt every issue wather it correlates or not, the point is to stand together and support our issues that matter in our communities and country.
